Program Notes

‘In the Hall of the Mountain King’ was composed by Edvard Grieg in 1867. It was originally written for the sixth scene of Henrik Ibsen’s play “Peer Gynt”. In the first it was included in Grieg’s musical canon as part of Opus 23, but was later used as the finale of the ‘Peer Gynt Suite No. 1, Op. 46’. This energetic piece of music is one of Grieg’s most famous composition and is easily recognizable because of its pervasive use in film and television.
