Program Notes

Troika is a Russian word that means group of three. It is used to describe a horse drawn sleigh pulled by a team of three horses. This music named “Troika” was written by the great Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev for the film “Lieutenant Kijé” in 1933. Prokofiev later arranged the music into a suite in 1937 which included five movements. Troika, the fourth movement, has become associated with snow and winter.
