Program Notes

“Carol of the Bells” celebrates the New Year and is based on a Ukrainian folk song called “Shchedryk”. In pre-Christian Ukraine the New Year was originally celebrated during the arrival of spring, which is why the lyrics to the song speak of birds returning and the birth of lambs. This piece was premiered in the United States on October 5th 1921, at Carnegie Hall by the Ukrainian National Chorus. It has since become a popular tune in North America and is heard often during the holiday season.

LYRICS

Refrain
Ding, ding, ding, dong
Ding, ding, ding, dong

Born a King on Bethlehem’s plain
Gold I bring to crown Him again,
King forever, ceasing never,
Over us all to reign.

Refrain

Hark how the bells, sweet silver bells
All seem to say:, , throw cares away
Christmas is here bringing good cheer
To young and old, meek and the bold"

Ding, ding, ding, dong, that is their song
With joyful ring all caroling
One seems to hear words of good cheer
From everywhere filling the air

Oh, how they pound, raising the sound
O'er hill and dale, telling their tale
Gaily they ring while people sing
Songs of good cheer, Christmas is here

Merry, merry, merry, merry Christmas
Merry, merry, merry, merry Christmas
On, on they send, on without end
Their joyful tone to every home

Refrain

Oh, how they pound, raising the sound
O'er hill and dale, telling their tale

Refrain

Hark how the bells, sweet silver bells
All seem to say, throw cares away
